Colorado Mountain Retreat
This 4,500-square-foot Colorado retreat was conceived as a timeless expression of western design paired with the comfort and efficiency of modern living. Oriented to maximize its expansive 120-mile viewscape, the home combines classic regional materials with advanced building performance to create a durable, low-maintenance sanctuary in the mountains.
The design incorporates passive solar principles, with the main living spaces organized to capture seasonal sunlight while the earth-sheltered lower level provides exceptional thermal stability and year-round comfort. In-floor radiant heating delivers an even, energy-efficient warmth throughout the home, enhancing the quiet, restorative character of the interior.
Exterior materials were selected for longevity, authenticity, and minimal upkeep. The recycled, self-weathering steel roof develops a protective patina that blends naturally with the high-desert environment, while all-heart cedar siding offers inherent durability and a warm, organic presence. Together, these materials anchor the structure to its setting with understated permanence.
The result is a Colorado retreat that honors traditional western sensibilities while embracing modern livability—an enduring home shaped for comfort, environmental responsiveness, and connection to the dramatic landscape.
